As you may have read in the October First Edition, our volunteer fundraising committee postponed the auction slated for October 29th in Vancouver.
Naturally we’ve been fielding questions:
Why have we postponed the live auction?
We wanted to feel absolutely confident in drawing a large enough Vancouver audience to fetch the maximum prices that the donated art work and services deserved. We realized we were missing a comprehensive contact list of potential Vancouver donors, and the timeline was too aggressive to fulfill that need. Therefore, we felt it most important not to disappoint our Hornby artists and donors with poor attendance and pieces being sold for too little. We thought better to make use of all things we put into place, like auction volunteers, the jurors, the venue, etc. and use them when we can do justice to the works and services that are donated.
Why the sudden effort?
By the end of this calendar year, we have the opportunity to obtain matching funds from Island Coastal Economic Trust. These funds will be made available to us if we pass their second phase of funding screening. One important key to our receiving additional funding is our ability to demonstrate continuing community support for the New Arts Centre. Therefore the fundraising plan of an auction seemed like a means to communicate our support. Even without the auction we have raised $20,000 through direct donations in our recent effort by spreading the word. We are also pursuing other large funding opportunities and grants.
What is the current plan for the auction?
In order to add to monies already raised for the matching Island Coastal Economic Trust grant, we have secured an opportunity with Heffel Galleries in Vancouver. They have agreed to put some auction pieces they are interested in online. They have robust online resources to host an auction and an international network of patrons to command the prices we hope to achieve. Though Heffel will be selective in what they put online, we are still asking willing artists to submit images of three works for consideration and a one-page bio/CV. If you are interested and able, please submit your jpegs to HIAC at email@example.com by October 20th with the same details as before (a reserve bid, name of work, value of work, address phone and email, choice of percentage retention). Should your work not be chosen, as Heffel’s auctions are thematic, we are still planning a live auction in the new year, date to be announced.
We sincerely apologize for the confusion we may have caused you in working to hold a live auction in Vancouver. We just felt it prudent to act more thoughtfully with your works and services.
